Under Hawaii Revised Statues 431:9-223, a surety bond is required to apply for a public adjuster’s license. Specifically, a bond in the amount of $10,000 from an authorized surety company is required. The total aggregate liability is limited to $10,000.

The bond’s obligee is the State of Hawaii. The public adjuster surety bond must not have an expiration date, and it must be maintained while licensed. However, the surety company can cancel the bond with a 60-day written notice to the commissioner at the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. 

The bond premium is due annually. To assist you with the maintenance of your public adjuster bond, we will contact you prior to the due date each year with current payment instructions.

The Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs is the authority for public adjuster licensing and renewals. If you are applying for a new license or your license has been inactive for over a year, the following requirements apply:
 

• Completion of the Hawaii Insurance License Exam
• Completion of the state’s adjuster exam  
• Application
• A $10,000 surety bond
